Beginners/Getting Started

Welcome to the wonderful world of the upright bass. The term upright bass is used by those of us who focus on jazz or non-orchestral genres. When walking into a music shop, you’re better off using the term double-bass since that’s what it’s been most commonly called for that last.

The first question that I routinely hear from beginners is “how do I get started”. I’ve broken down this topics to get you started.

1. Getting An Upright Bass

Different types of basses such as carved vs plywood. Advantages of renting. Bass sizing.

2. Strings for the Upright Bass

String types and recommendations for a beginner.

3. Standing vs Sitting

Should you sit on a stool or stand while playing?
