I’ve just put together a section on the site that addresses some of the common questions that beginners have about how to get started with the Upright Bass. It’s a work in progress, but the same questions come up daily so I posted it with the most commonly asked question to get it started.

I would like to know what to look for on a Bass for a High School/College bound student in the price range of 3,000.00 to 5,000.00 range. Flat back or regular? What will work for the next 7 years (high school & college) Only fount an Anton Richter, don’t know what to do. Please help with suggestions.
Thank you,
Flatback or roundbacks actually aren’t a primary consideration in choosing a bass. Most people try both flatback and roundbacks when finding a bass and if the bass that they like has a roundback or flatback, then that’s what it has. Some suggestions based on owner feedback:

I have a Thompson plywood bass and am very pleased with it’s playability and accoustic tone. I ordered it with a realist pick up on it. When I play it through an amp I use a GK 500 & 8×10 cab & line out through the band’s P.A. Question: I haven’t been able to get the tones that I desire and was wondering if a pre-amp will help? Also does anyone know what kind of effects to use to get the soft growling tones that Brian Bromberg gets on his Downright Upright album?
I’ve been playing electric bass for many years and recently started playing upright. It’s fun and my band and out followers like too.
Originally a guitarist and I know how to play electric bass. Started early I would like to start playing an Upright. I am hopping to start a classic horror rock/blues style band. I’d love information. Mostly just with buying them used. I’m getting through school and stuff. So my price range is 1000 and under.
I’m an electric bass player wanting to move to the upright for jazz and experimental music. Any suggestions on a bass maybe under $1500, something good to get started on.
Here is an article I wrote about switching from electric to upright.
